Don’t listen to what they say, go see – Chinese Proverb.
I’ve never been to Venice, yes it’s on my list so soon 😉 But I had a glimpse of it and saw what it would be like to be in a place where waterways are a dominant means of transport. It’s quite the experience. I was not disappointed.
The best way to get to Giethoorn is to fly to any close by cities like Amsterdam, then rent a car and drive to the town. If you’re not in the mood to drive or simply can’t, get a train to Steenwijk and then Bus 70 to Giethoorn, Dominee Hylkemaweg, however be aware that the public transport shuts down post 6 pm, although that wouldn’t be so bad in a town so pretty (unless you had other plans :P).
Once you get there, spend time walking around the town. You’ll come to realize that at least once in your life have painted/sketched a scenery like this. The sight is quite spectacular, as if gods hand painted the scenery and brought it to life for us all to gape at. With no roads in the town, best to walk on the sideways or for a faster transit, rent a motor boat.
The best thing to do in Giethoorn is rent a motor or paddling boat for a couple of hours, from here. If you’re not up for a boat drive yourself, you could consider joining the tourist canal ride with a guided tour of the town. Maybe both ? The canals are marked with directions on where to go and what route to follow with proper sign posts. Try not to go over the speed limit 😉
While the sun is still out, do enjoy chilling in one of the numerous cafes besides the canals. Maybe grab a couple of beers and friet (French fries) and chill with from friends, family or maybe someone special <3. Summers are the best weather to visit – longer days, pretty sunshine and no rains 😛 Spend a night, stargaze, play some pleasant music, relax and have a good time.
And remember, be nice to others 😛
